Featured on Houzz : A Chic Basement Conversion
How We Turned a Basement into the Heart of the Home
We’re thrilled to be featured once again on Houzz UK—this time for one of our most rewarding transformations: Room of the Week – A Chic Basement Conversion in Surrey.
The article shines a spotlight on our full-width basement conversion, created for a brilliant client (an artisan cake maker) who needed a home that worked hard for her business and her family. This space—now the social and visual hub of the home—was originally underutilised, dark and disconnected. We changed all that.
This basement conversion design features a bold mix of materials, with exposed brick walls, concrete floors, and contemporary lighting to bring warmth and atmosphere to the space. The goal was to create a welcoming, open-plan layout that could flex between work, family time, and entertaining teenagers and guests.
A bespoke walnut storage piece provides architectural interest and essential functionality, grounding the dining space and linking the old and new parts of the home. Pendant lighting in mixed metallic finishes adds personality and contrast above the long timber dining table—perfect for anything from weekend brunches to project planning.
The exposed brick backdrop plays a crucial role in the overall feel—adding richness, texture, and a subtle industrial edge. We softened it with carefully chosen finishes, warm-toned lighting, and tactile details like sheepskin throws and soft seating.
The project was also designed to be futureproof: microcement floors with underfloor heating, ample hidden storage, and zoned lighting for day-to-night use. We always aim to balance beauty with practicality, and this conversion is a textbook example.
