The honest answer is that it varies significantly depending on the scope, the level of renovation, and the quality of finishes you’re aiming for.

What I can say is this:

Most of my clients are undertaking meaningful change. They’re redesigning kitchens, reconfiguring layouts, investing in joinery, lighting, furniture and art. They want it done properly and they want it to last.

During our early conversations, we talk openly about budget ranges. I’ll guide you on where investment matters and where we can simplify. My role is not to inflate costs, but to help you avoid expensive missteps.

This is such a common tension.

Colour, when handled without thought, can feel overwhelming. When handled with care, it brings warmth, depth and energy to a space.

Nothing is ever chosen in isolation. I look at tone, texture and balance as a whole. A bold wallpaper might sit alongside quieter upholstery. A strong artwork might be grounded with antique timber or softened with natural materials. It’s about composition rather than statement-making for its own sake.

The aim is always harmony within your home, not unnecessary theatrics.

And gently put, I tend to see far more regret from playing things too safe than from embracing something that has been properly considered.

Some homeowners do, and then find themselves surprised by the sheer volume of decisions required and the speed at which those decisions need to be made. Once construction is underway, questions come thick and fast. Tile layouts. Tap positions. Socket heights. Lighting types. It can feel relentless.

The real challenge arises when building work begins before the design thinking has been fully resolved. The smoothest projects are those where the design has been given proper attention upfront. Overall layout, lighting strategy, joinery proportions, sightlines, furniture scale, artwork placement. These elements need careful consideration before electrics and plumbing are fixed into place.

Builders are highly skilled at construction. But they are not responsible for the aesthetic direction of your home. Without a clear design framework, it’s very easy to default to over-specification or the all-too-common “runway grid” of ceiling spotlights simply because no alternative has been properly planned.

When the design is considered early, the build tends to flow more calmly. Fewer reactive decisions. Fewer compromises. And far less risk of expensive adjustments later.

Thoughtful design at the beginning is rarely a cost. More often, it is what protects your investment.
